Hold a meeting

Ready to connect with other people in your area? Organize a local meeting to talk about The New Agenda with others who share your concerns about sexism.

Co-founder Cynthia Ruccia took the plunge and held the first grassroots meeting of The New Agenda in Columbus, Ohio on December 7. Read Cynthia’s report here.

Follow these steps to organize your own successful grassroots meeting:

  1. Find a friend who shares your concerns and would like to help grow The New Agenda. You can go it alone, but it’s always helpful to have an ally to share the effort.
  2. Find a place for the meeting and set a date.
  3. Draw up your invitation list. Don’t be shy — list everyone you know who might be interested. Family, friends, coworkers, acquaintances, women, men, old, young, Democrat, Republican — everybody!
  4. Invite people by telephone or in person. Snail mail and email are tempting time-savers, but both are poor substitutes for personal interaction. You’ll get a much higher response rate by talking to people individually.
  5. Plan your agenda. You might start the meeting with an inspiring quote, as Cynthia did, and provide a quick history of The New Agenda. Give the attendees a chance to introduce themselves to the group. You might report on what The New Agenda is doing now and invite discussion on next steps.
  6. After the meeting, be sure to follow up with your new group. Start an email list for discussions and plans. You might even get a Facebook page.
  7. Tell us about your success!
