Women at a Crossroads: The Lessons of Mary Kay
My mentor Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Inc., talks in her autobiography “Miracle Happen” about why she decided to put her company together. She writes about how as a young girl in Dallas, Texas, she had married the local Elvis impersonator, had three children, and then found herself alone to raise those children when “Elvis” decided to take off for greener pastures.
Mary Kay decided to go to work selling Stanley Home Products because she could make a good living, but as a single mother, she also could work …

A Lesson Learned from Coakley
I have to admit that the cross-currents from the Massachusetts Senate race are headache inducing. The whiplash flip flop, the tone deaf paeans to this healthcare bill, the nationalizing of the race, the partisan warfare, the brass knuckle tactics, you name it, its all here. The sanctification of the “Ted Kennedy” seat, Hottie McAwesome, “is Martha good enough?”—-blech!!! If I were catching H1N1 it must feel something like this. I want to lie down in bed and wait til I feel better.
This race is happening against a crucial backdrop for …

Why I’ll Eat Crow for Martha Coakley Too
Some of you may remember Act 1 of my opus, Eating Crow For Caroline Kennedy. It was about my supporting her for NY Senate even though I couldn’t stand the thought of her. I mean she just wasn’t right—–she got in the way of us having the first woman president. She wasn’t supporting women—-why should I support that *#&@*?
I’m still not happy with the way things went in 2008, and 2009 wasn’t any better. Now we’re starting 2010 with another in-your-face situation for those of us who are going to …

Along with Susan and Sarah, We Will Fight On!
It’s been a tough year for us women. The more organizations, lead by The New Agenda, point out to our countrymen (and women) how far women’s standing in the United States lags behind popular perception, the more we ourselves learn how bad it is. People are generally shocked to discover that the United States ranks #83 in female representation in government. Shocked—-how can that be? And that AFGHANISTAN (!!!), the ultimate symbol of female oppression to many actually LEADS the United States in female representation in government. How is that …

U.S. Senator Jennifer Brunner, An Ohioan’s Dream
I’d like you to meet another brave soul, Jennifer Brunner, who is running for the open U.S. Senate seat here in Ohio. I use the word “another” because winning a U.S. Senate seat is blood sport here in the United States, and for a woman of either party to break that particular glass ceiling, well let’s just say it isn’t for the faint of heart.
Last February I wrote a piece for our blog that made its rounds in the Ohio op-ed pages about the fact that it was time for Ohioans …

Sarah Palin IS Qualified To Be President
Hey—–Earth to the Republican boy’s club—–Sarah Palin IS qualified to be President of the United States!
A disturbing meme is developing among the Republican male establishment (and some women too, I’m sad to say) that Sarah Palin is charismatic and fantastic, she’d make an incredibly successful talk show host, but of course, she’s not qualified to be POTUS. Say what?
One more day, one more exercise regimen for me, and one more eye-popping example of sexism. This particular example is of the subtle variety that is hard to define. But here we …

YOU Make the Difference!
Hi Everyone!
I’m writing to all of the members and supporters of The New Agenda today to do a little retrospective since we’re at that time of year when it pays to look backwards, forwards, and then to regroup.
Where We’ve Been:
The birth of The New Agenda!
The New Agenda was born as a reaction to the sexism of the 2008 campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. A group of people, fed up with the intense misogyny of 2008, and fed up with the lack of response from the supposed “leaders” of …

Carly And Lynn – At It Again!
It’s now been a year since the 2008 elections have been
over and almost two years since the politicking for it took off. We all remember the early primaries. I, and many of you, can sadly recall the moment when we realized that Hillary Clinton was in some serious trouble from the sexists in the Democratic Party. We didn’t even know about Sarah Palin yet.
It’s instructive and actually exhilarating to look back at it all now. Yes it was devastating and horrifying to watch in disbelief as the sexism and misogyny …

Here We Go Again…
Bumped and updated from an earlier posting.
Okay everyone, fasten your seatbelts. We’re in for quite a ride this week now that Sarah Palin’s book, Going Rogue: An American Life has come out. The book is officially out on Tuesday, and Palin will be making her first appearance of the week on Oprah Winfrey tomorrow. We’ve gotten snippets from both the book and the interview, and the assault has begun. The worst thing is this disgusting cover from Newsweek, who as you see has decided to run a picture of Palin …

Speak Up Ladies!!!
The opinions expressed herein are those of the author, and not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
I am Jewish. I grew up in a small Midwestern city without many Jews back in the 1960’s, and even though my family was well off, there were at that time many things we were barred from doing. When we moved into a new house, our realtor went to every homeowner in the neighborhood to find out if there was going to be any problem with us moving in. We weren’t allowed to join …
