The following report was written by my son last March when he was in third grade.  He also wanted you all to know that his teacher gave the class the option to write about famous women OR men, and that he was the only boy in the class to chose a famous woman.

Sojourner Truth
I chose Sojourner Truth because not many kids know her.
Sojourner was born some time in 1797. When Sojourner was a kid her name was Isabella. You may be wondering why she has no birth date …

Dear Friends,
This weekend, I was honored to represent The New Agenda as one of  300 international leaders at The Daily Beast’s Women in the World summit. Tina Brown  blogged: Will the Hudson Theatre explode with so many female fire-eaters under one roof?
Women in the World was convened to discuss international women’s issues such as human trafficking, rape as a war weapon, and improving the lives of girls.  Despite the summit’s focus on international women’s issues, so many of the themes are central to our battles here at home:  …

There are some major events this week surrounding international women’s right.
Yesterday, The New Agenda’s Vice President, Betty Cotton, attended Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards event in Washington DC. Betty reports from the conference: “Gender equity is THE major issue of this century.”
This weekend, I’ll be representing The New Agenda at The Daily’s Beast Women in the World summit. Tina Brown has put together an incredible rooster of women activists from around the world. Tina write today at her website: “The rights of women are to …

The following piece by The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind is featured at The Huffington Post.
Senator Blanche Lincoln finds herself in the political version of a perfect storm. Her home state of Arkansas is centrist. Predictably, Republicans are chastising her vote for Obama’s health care legislation. Progressive organizations, unexpectedly, are throwing millions of dollars behind a male Democrat to challenge Senator Lincoln in a primary. And shockingly, a women’s organization dedicated to getting women elected says she deserves it. Despite all the darts being thrown at Senator Lincoln from seemingly every …

Thanks for Marille and Nancy who sent me a cover letter by Artemis about the NYU-ISAW Exhibit The Lost World of Old Europe.
I traveled into New York City this past weekend having only a cursory knowledge of what to expect.  And of course, at that time, I had not read the wonderful piece that Artemis has since posted on our blog.
Even to my extremely untrained eye, there was something terribly wrong with this exhibit.  The artifacts just did not match up with the story line told on the wall …

In the coming days, The New Agenda will be launching our new website for The New Agenda Foundation, our 501(c)(3).  The Foundation’s work will be educational, and our primary issue will be teen dating violence and the sexualization of our teenage girls.
Please also be on the lookout for information on an educational event on teen dating violence co-sponsored by The New Agenda Foundation and Liz Claiborne Inc. (commitee in formation).
And for those of you thinking, well maybe elsewhere, but not in my community, think again.
Everything I’ve read in the …

After hearing barely the utterance of a women’s issue out of Harry Reid’s mouth for as long as I can recall, imagine my surprise yesterday to hear  Senator Reid speaking out on domestic violence.
What you might ask gave Senator Reid this epiphany on this escalating crisis in our country?  While violence generally in our country has been flat to down for the better part of a decade, violence against women continues to soar.  And of course, the untold crisis of teen dating violence continues to froth unnoticed by politicians like …

We’ve all been well schooled on the historic importance of our country’s first president, George Washington.  Yesterday, I had a chance to learn about another amazing individual in her own right – Martha Washington.
Martha met George when she was 27, he was 26.  She was a widow with a young daughter and son.  Martha also had given birth to two other children, both of whom had died at a very early age.  Interestingly, George and Martha did not have any children together; although that’s a fact that is rarely highlighted …

There’s an old Chinese proverb: A journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step. That has been our work here at The New Agenda – one small step at a time towards unity for women.
And so I was delighted yesterday to see an article over at MORE which gives reasons to like Sarah Palin.  All the more so because it is a piece written by Judith Coyne, Exective Editor of MORE and like myself, a lifelong Democrat.  Unlike myself, Judith pulled the lever for Obama.
You can read Judith’s …

There was a seemingly positive article in The New York Times on Friday called Palin, Visible and Vocal, Is Positioned for Variety of Roles. As I read the first part of the article, I thought, hmm, maybe the NYT can come around to finally giving some balanced coverage to one of the most visible female politicians of our time.
There article starts off innocently enough, making the point that most of us have realized:  That Sarah Palin has a huge national following – and numerous prospects for her future in …
