Meg Whitman, a Republican running for governor of California, reached out to women early on in her campaign by forming a coalition of women aptly called Megawomen.
MEGaWomen, our women’s coalition, is a critical part of my campaign. Our mission is to inspire women throughout California to Recruit, Volunteer, and VOTE.
This got my attention. If a candidate is reaching out to women in such a direct and organized way, she must value our votes. That’s an absolute requirement for me. A candidate who values women’s votes wants to get those votes …

On Monday, February 1, 2010 the Senate is expected to vote to confirm M. Patricia Smith to become Solicitor of Labor. Senator Enzi and a few other Republican Senators have vowed to block Patricia’s confirmation on the Senate floor.
Patricia needs the support of a few independent Republicans!
Some likely supporters are Senators : Snowe (ME),  Collins (ME), Graham (SC),   Lugar (IN), Bond (MO)  Brownback (KS), Voinovich (OH)  Johanns (NE)

Everyone (starting with my mother) is raving about the new Meryl Streep/Alec Baldwin manifesto for baby boomer women.  Yes, the successful, enviably glowing, older woman can score the overweight, bumbling, self indulgent, needy boy-man back from the sexy, bitchy, young bombshell. Wow, what a step forward for women in a post-feminist age!
No, not really.   It is not only socially acceptable for men to trade up with a much younger woman for their Act …

Happy Lilly Ledbetter Day! That’s right. One year ago today, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed into law. Brava!
Lilly Ledbetter herself chose to celebrate the momentous day for women by endorsing Cheryle Jackson for U.S. Senate, whose primary is Tuesday.
“ I can think of no better way to celebrate this important milestone of the Lilly Ledbetter Act’s enactment into law than electing the first woman President and CEO of the Chicago Urban League and a true champion of economic empowerment, Cheryle Jackson, to the U.S. Senate,” …

Bowling Down Barriers: Woman’s Pro-Bowling Victory is One for the Books
When Kelly Kulick sends pins crashing, she’s also smashing a glass ceiling. Kulick, 32 and from Union, N.J., bowled down an epic barrier last weekend, winning the 45th Tournament of Champions, one of professional bowling’s most prestigious events. She’s the first woman ever to win a top-level men’s bowling tournament.
Kelly Kulick is the first woman to win a top level men’s bowling tournament. She did it in style, with four straight strikes to open the match and a final …

This is just unbelievable.  How do these guys even have jobs?
Glenn Thrush wrote yesterday on his blog at Politco about Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.  The piece is mostly about Harold Ford referring to Sen Gillibrand as a “parakeet”.  But Thrush also reports the following (my emphasis added):
Gillibrand also shrugged off a Research 2000/Daily Kos poll showing Ford leading among women…
Huh?  That’s not remotely what the poll actually shows.  Did you even read it Glenn?
Here’s the Research 2000/Daily Kos poll results (my emphasis added again):
Democratic Senate Primary
Kirsten Gillibrand (D) 41
Harold Ford …

Talk about a trailblazer! Or a waveblazer? Abby Sunderland is an inspiration to girls both young and old.
MARINA DEL REY, Calif. — A 16-year-old has set out to become the youngest person to sail around the world alone.

Abby Sunderland of Thousand Oaks sailed into the sunny Pacific Ocean on Saturday after being delayed a few days by a series of violent storms in California.
Her boat-builder father, Laurence, along with other family members and fiends, cheered at the Del Rey Yacht Club as they watched the 40-foot craft called Wild Eyes …

The blame continues, along with a lesson for all of us.  Perhaps Martha Coakley should switch to the Libertarian party? I wanted Martha Coakley to win because I found her to be an impressive woman with a record of championing women, children, and the working class. The state’s first female Attorney General, she has proven herself to be a strong winner. Yet, she lost the election.
Why is this?
Many Democrats, including the White House, are pointing …

Recently ABC News reported on teens who were subjected to sexual harassment at the workplace.  The majority of the offenses toward the young women happened at their first jobs working for the fast food industry.  PBS also covered the same topic back in February 2009.  PBS reported that an estimated 200,000 teenagers are assaulted at their place of employment every year and that the abuse goes largely unreported.
The video below gives one a glimpse into one of the many forms of harassment and how it can escalate.

Teens need to understand …

Those of you following our blog know that we have been recommending a boycott of Game Change due to it’s outrageous level of misogyny.
I returned my pre-ordered copy without cracking a page in protest.  With the store credit, I bought Dee Dee Myers book, Why Women Should Rule the World.  We also recommended on this blog 2 other books written by and about women, Going Rogue by Sarah Palin and Notes from the Cracked Ceiling by Anne Kornblut, both of which are excellent reads.  We need to support women authors …
