Hillary takes the lead on ending the rape crisis in the Congo

Jul 31, 2009 | 14 Comments

We need more women in politics to help fight the crisis of violence against women and our teenage daughters both at home and abroad.  Read on…
This week The Washington Post is reporting that Secretary Hillary Clinton is visiting the Congo to denounce the alarming rate of rape in the region.
Speaking on this topic, The New Agenda’s Amy Siskind had this to say to the U.S. News & World Report about Secretary Clinton’s trip to the Congo to help women there:
This is what leadership looks like.
Hillary had told us in the …

Presidential Mentions for Senator Klobuchar

Jul 30, 2009 | 39 Comments

Following Secretary Clinton’s assertion on Meet the Press that “there is a woman” out there who will one day become president, Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post column “The Fix” has been speculating on who that woman might be. He says that
No politician got more recommendations on The Fix than the Minnesota Senator [Amy Klobuchar]. Klobuchar is young enough — 49 — and ambitious enough to make a bid [in 2016].
Sen Klobuchar, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, recently called out sexism against Judge Sotomayor.  According to the Minnesota Independent:
Klobuchar …

One Level Head in Gates Fiasco
Wears a Ponytail

Jul 29, 2009 | 9 Comments

In the dust-up over a Harvard professor’s recent disorderly conduct arrest, three men shot from the hip and misfired, while one untrained but careful woman acted responsibly.  As Wendy Murphy, attorney for the 911 caller pointed out in a press conference:
As this story has unfolded (as you all know), we’ve talked a lot about and debated the overreactions of three men, Professor Gates, Sergeant Crowley, and even President Obama, all men with special training, in one way or another, on the important topics at issue in this controversy. Well, I’m …

Toddlers & Tiaras ->
Teens & Therapy?

Jul 29, 2009 | 7 Comments

Hat tip to Mark
TLC network has launched its second season of Toddlers & Tiaras, a show that follows little girls as they don spray tans, hair pieces and false eyelashes in their parents’ quests to win beauty pageants.  The tots also learn to strut, and according to the promo video  on the TLC site, shake their booties.  I found particularly heartbreaking the video of two-year-old Roni, who’s mother taught her to crook her finger and say:
Hey judges, come here, baby.
In their coverage of the new season, ABC …

TAKE ACTION: Is Donny Deutsch the next Chris Matthews?

Jul 28, 2009 | 13 Comments

When The New Agenda was formed almost one year ago, the poster boy of sexism on MSNBC was Chris Matthews. We spoke out here, here, and here. Since then, Mr. Matthews seems to have learned a lesson, decided not to run for Senator of PA, and toned down his sexist rhetoric.
But not Donny Deutsch. He missed the memo. He is dialing up a disgusting version of sexist terms and rhetoric on the airwaves.
Yesterday, Donny held an open discussion on his obsession with Sarah Palin’s “hotness”.  …

Congratulations to Judge Sotomayor

Jul 28, 2009 | 2 Comments

The Senate Judiciary Committee today endorsed the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be an associate justice of the Supreme court.  The full Senate is expected to approve her nomination next week.
All twelve democrats on the committee voted for Sotomayor, as did Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC, who previously had said that Sotomayor’s temprament stuck out like a sore thumb.  Six other Republicans voted against the nomination, including ranking Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, who said in USA Today editorial:
I don’t believe that Judge Sotomayor has the deep-rooted convictions …

Building a Construction Career Free of Harassment

Jul 28, 2009 | 5 Comments

Bianca Wisniewski. Photo by Siegel
Last week, construction supervisor Bianca Wisniewski filed a $20M sexual harassment lawsuit against JP Morgan and others.  As the NY Daily News reported:
Wisniewski “is a rare exception who broke through the concrete and steel,” lawyer Steve Wittels wrote in court papers.  “But the male-centric brotherood struck back at Ms. Wisniewski and quickly sealed the breach.”  Wisniewski says elevator operator Steve Greco groped and propositioned her while her bosses brushed off her claims…  “Everybody kisses engineer Steve,” the suit quotes Greco as boasting.  “This is a …

Is this poll sexist?

Jul 27, 2009 | No Comment

A number of our viewers have written us to complain about a poll conducted by Fox News. The poll found that:
About a third of Americans think the best job for Palin is homemaker (32 percent).
Hmm…when’s the last time that a male politician was given a next option as a stay-at-home dad? Many women do leave the workforce, yes, to stay at home and raise their children. But is this question an appropriate poll option?
We thought we’d let our viewers blow off some steam by conducting …

Palin Agrees: Our Children are Off Limits!!!

Jul 27, 2009 | 32 Comments

This blog pieces is reposted in light of Sarah Palin’s speech yesterday.
Yesterday, Sarah Palin officially stepped down as Governor of Alaska. There has been a whole lot of conjecture in the media and across the blogosphere as to why Sarah chose this path.
To me, the most telling part of her speech yesterday was this one phrase:
Mrs. Palin also took aim at the media, saying her replacement, Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, “has a very nice family, too, so leave his kids alone!“
Please read on – we want to encourage women …

Blaming the Victim: an Epidemic

Jul 27, 2009 | 6 Comments

The author is expressing her own opinions, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
According to sportswriter Christine Brennan, ESPN sportscaster Erin Andrews deserves some of the blame for having been videotaped nude – on account of her beauty.  As ABC reported, Brennan first commented on Andrews’ partial culpability on a sports radio show.  Then Brennan followed up on Facebook  and Twitter with this:
“On the Erin Andrews situation, a quick thought for those who have asked: There are hundreds of women covering sports in this country who haven’t had this happen to them. I wish it …
