The Three Percent Problem

Jun 30, 2009 | No Comment

In launching its new report on Women in Fund Management, the National Council for Research on Women said:
Women-owned funds significantly outperform funds in general. According to the latest data from Hedge Fund Research Inc., from 2000 until the present, women-owned funds delivered an average annual return of 9.06% compared with only 5.82% among a broader composite index of hedge funds. Yet, despite these strong performance indicators, today women manage a mere 3% of approximately 2 trillion dollars invested in hedge funds.
Jacki Zehner, lead architect of the report, related her personal …

Farrah Fawcett Was No Feminist Icon, But She Mattered to Women…and Men

Jun 30, 2009 | 15 Comments

Cross-posted from About.com with the permission of the author. Opinions expressed herein are those of the author and not necessary The New Agenda.
Farrah Fawcett’s death would have been big news last week if Michael Jackson hadn’t unexpectedly died approximately five hours after she did.
It was an ironic ending for this pop culture icon — once regarded as the quintessential all-American pinup girl — to have her thunder stolen by another pop culture icon who was anything but all-American. Yet Farrah and Michael both labored under the burden of a public …

Biden: Just Get It Up

Jun 29, 2009 | 7 Comments

When Vice President Biden announced last week the appointment of Lynn Rosenthal as White House Advisor on Violence Against Women, most of the mainstream media reported (if anything) only Biden’s brief allusion to the Bush administration.  With the exception of Karen Travers, what the media didn’t report was that Biden (who authored the original VAW Act) made substantive and heartfelt remarks about his (and Rosenthal’s) commitment to eradicating violence.  Here are excerpts.

My father was the one who taught me that the single most serious sin a man or woman can commit is to …

Archbishop Robert Duncan
The Anglican Church of North America convened for the first time in Texas last week, electing as their Archbishop Robert Duncan, whose qualifications for the post include the fact that he has a penis. Duncan is leading a group of what claims to be 100,000 parishioners and 50 bishops in breaking away from the 2-million member Episcopal Church USA, headed by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who has no penis.

The schism roots reach back to the first Episcopal ordination of women thirty-three years ago …

Ledbetter: Our Work Is Not Done

Jun 28, 2009 | No Comment

In her keynote speech at the American Association of University Women national convention yesterday, Lilly Ledbetter told attendees she wishes she hadn’t needed to become a national figure because she wishes she’d never been a victim of inequality.  However, now that she is a standard bearer, she’s not content to rest after the passage of the the Fair Pay Act that bears her name.  She told the convention:
Our work is not done.  I told Obama that day.
Ledbetter urged attendees to ask their senators to support the Paycheck Fairness Act.  As Senator Barbara Mikulski explained:
Women make this …

MUST SEE Flick: The Stoning of Soraya M.

Jun 27, 2009 | 12 Comments

actress Mozhan Marn as Soraya
This weekend marks the film debut of The Stoning of Soraya M. As if by some cosmic coincidence, the film is set in a small village in modern day Iran.
I was invited to a pre-screening of the film in the spring. The Stoning of Soraya was one of the most upsetting films that I have ever seen. Many times I had to literally cover my face and turn away from the screen.
That said, it is extremely important that we all make the effort …

Uncle Sam Out, Aunt Samantha In?

Jun 27, 2009 | 20 Comments

The author is a national political commentator and columnist on Fox News, Fox Business, CNN, CNBC and MSNBC.  This article is cross-posted from her blog.  She expresses her own opinions, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Andrea Tantaros
When it comes to politics and extramarital affairs the two, sadly, go hand in hand. There’s Edwards, Vitter, Clinton, Fossella, McGreevy, Sherwood, Hart, Spitzer, Condit, Ensign and now Governor Mark Sanford (I could go on, and on, but my columns have word limits).
When this situation occurs, as it regularly does, the public constantly finds itself …

Jun 26, 2009 | 3 Comments

This news is making the rounds:

The woman was arrested; the man was not.  A sampling of headlines follows.  See any imbalance?
Oklahoma City Woman trades sex for case of chips (The Oklahoman)
Police say Okla. prostitute accepted unusual payment (USA Today blog)
Prostitute’s Price:  A $30 Box of Chips (The Business Insider)
Woman Trades Sex for Snack Chips (MyFox Chicago)
The award for gender balance — if not taste — goes to The Smoking Gun:
Chips and Dip.  Cops:  Prostitute, Frito-Lay worker agreed on exchange of oral treats.
The Smoking Gun not only gave a balanced headline, …

Are Menopausal Men Fit to Hold Public Office?

Jun 26, 2009 | 8 Comments

This essay originally was posted on the author’s blog.  The author presents her own opinions, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.
Menopausal man confessing to an affair.
Well, we now have another midlife crisis, male menopausal man, holding public office, who is admitting to having an affair.  This one cries and blubbers about it.
Hey, if he was a woman, do you think he would be getting any sympathy as he rides his emotional roller coaster up and down his lover’s body? Hell no; why, we would be hearing the usual misogynist …

Desire and Yearning, Burger King Style

Jun 25, 2009 | 6 Comments

This post originally appeared on the author’s blog, Jenn Q. Public.  The author presents her own views, not necessarily those of The New Agenda.  A Reuters columnist points out that the ad was not created by Burger King’s American agency, Crispin, Porter & Bogusky, and that it is running only in Singapore.  Nevertheless, this ad reflects on the character of Burger King, an American company.
I present you with reason number 247 to stay away from Burger King:
