For the first time ever, rather than endorse a female candidate on a presidential ticket, NOW has instead endorsed the all-male ticket running against her.

This seems wildly out of line with NOW’s Statement of Purpose: “to take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society now, exercising all the privileges and responsibilities thereof in truly equal partnership with men.”

A history of NOW’s political endorsements:

    1972
NOW endorses Shirley Chisholm, a NOW member, in the democratic primary. Chisholm is the first African American woman to run for President, and NOW’s first presidential endorsement.
    1984
NOW makes its second presidential endorsement, supporting women’s rights champion Walter Mondale, former Vice President, in the democratic primary. With NOW’s urging a “Woman VP NOW,” Mondale selects Geraldine Ferraro for Vice President. NOW campaigns nationwide for Mondale/Ferraro.
    2003
NOW endorses Carol Moseley Braun, the second African-American woman to run for U.S. President.
    2008
On September 16, NOW endorsed Barack Obama for president. NOW originally endorsed Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton for president during the Democratic Primary. (source)

Amy Siskind, a founder of The New Agenda, comments on the NOW endorsement:

“This is a sad day for feminism in our country. With this random endorsement, NOW seeks to divide the women of this country by what party they belong to or how they feel about choice. Women need to stand together and help one another. Women’s issues such as unfair pay, domestic violence and unpaid leave impact women of all political parties.”

The following statement is taken from the National Organization for Women’s website:

STATEMENT OF KIM GANDY
Chair, National Organization for Women Political Action Committee (NOW PAC)

September 16, 2008

It is with great enthusiasm that I announce today, on behalf of the nation’s oldest and largest women’s rights organization, that the National Organization for Women Political Action Committee (NOW PAC) proudly endorses Sen. Barack Obama for President of the United States.

It is no coincidence that I am joined in this announcement by so many allied organizations that collectively represent a broad and diverse cross-section of U.S. women. From teachers to social workers, from business owners to college students, women in this country are lining up behind the candidate who is out there every day standing up — clearly and consistently — for women. Women of all ages, races and ethnicities are coming together in support of Sen. Obama and his pledge to fulfill this country’s promise of equal opportunity for our daughters as well as all our sons.

Although it is very unusual for us to endorse in a presidential election, this is an unprecedented candidate and an unprecedented time for our country. The NOW PAC reviewed Sen. Obama’s record and public statements on issues that disproportionately affect the women of this nation, and I spoke with him at length about his commitment to women’s equality. For example:

On pay equity. Sen. Obama is a co-sponsor of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act, legislation to end wage discrimination against women.

On reproductive rights. Sen. Obama is a co-sponsor of the Prevention First Act, to strengthen access to contraception and reproductive health care, and prevent unwanted pregnancies. He strongly supports Roe v. Wade and will oppose any efforts to overturn it.

On violence against women. Sen. Obama supports the continued reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act — of which Sen. Joe Biden is the chief sponsor — as well as the Security and Financial Empowerment (SAFE) Act, which is legislation to provide legal, medical and financial support to victims of domestic violence.

On the Supreme Court. Sen. Obama opposed the nominations of George Bush’s extreme right-wing nominees to the Supreme Court, who have consistently ruled against women’s rights.

For more than a decade, Barack Obama has said “yes” to women’s rights, while John McCain has consistently said “no” – NO to pay equity, NO to contraceptive access and reproductive rights, NO to appointing Supreme Court judges who will uphold women’s rights and civil rights, NO to funding shelters and other anti-violence programs, and NO to supporting working moms and dads with policies that support work/life balance.

NOW supported Sen. Hillary Clinton in the primary, and now we join with her in saying “NO” — No Way, No How, No McCain! And we proudly stand arm-in-arm with her in putting our hopes and our dreams, our hard work and our hard-earned money, behind the next President of the United States — Barack Obama, and his running mate, longtime friend and ally of women, Sen. Joe Biden.

This really speaks to the reality of the Democrat’s position on women and their issues. It’s all talk. It’s all factional, bullshit rhetoric designed to scare women into doing what they want them to do. They are furiously trying every obvious, predictable spin imaginable to cover that reality up, too.

They’ve lost me forever, and they had me strong just a year ago. They enjoyed my unwavering support for 20 years, but they will never get even occasional support again until they do something about what happened this year, and start showing me with action how they support women and their issues. There is nothing they can do to return me to my formerly partisan state, they can only cater to me on various issues and with some candidates, preferably female candidates.

NOW is an embarrassment to all women.
As a Gen-Xer, I have never felt represented by NOW – I am not aware of a single thing they have done in my lifetime to advance the empowerment of women. I have only ever been aware of NOW’s staggering impotence. Because of this I never expected any help (politically speaking) from NOW.
However, I never expected NOW, of all organizations, impotent or not, to actually stand as obstructionists in the progress of a woman. I mean, to actually take a stand in OPPOSTION to a woman who about to shatter one of the hardest glass ceilings in the history of mankind?! My God, they are demented.

I am beyond disgusted with NOW and the UNdemocrat party.

NOW and the UNdemocrat party are hypocritical, deliberately ignorant to facts, fearmongering, condescending, and completely insensitive to the diverse CHOICEs that women (other than those who-think-exactly-like-them) make. NOW is a Democrat Party Operative team. Period. I’ve had enough, too. Millions of voters have had enough. Guess what, N.O.W. et al: we’re not buying it anymore. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.

This election has been a wake-up call. The Democrat Party “leaders” and the Obama operatives choose to ignore the FACTS. They are pulling out all stops to keep us under their control. They underestimate the intelligence of the voters, don’t they? They underestimate the value that we place on honor, integrity, compassion for ALL, and the commitment to working across party lines in order to solve the problems we face today. Does NOW believe that we are only concerned with reproductive issues? How very ….. sexist.

To support a corrupt process and party that has utilized the most blatant misogynistic attacks I have ever witnessed and that has elevated an unqualified candidate with highly questionable integrity and frightening history of associations is incomprehensible.

Go to http://www.OpenSecrets.org and the locate National Organization of Women under Influence and Lobbying. You can look the Donations made to various campaigns. In 2008, NOW donated $17,331 to the Campaigns of Democratic Members of the House of Representatives and nothing to Republication Members of the House of Representatives. In addition, NOW contributed $8000 to the campaigns of Democratic Senators and nothing to the campaigns of Republican Senators. In 2006, NOW contributed a total of $83,259 to House Democrats and a total of $65 to House Republicans. In the Senate Campaigns

NOW contributed $10,152 to Democrats and $0 to Republicans. Clearly such partisanship reduces the effectiveness of any organization. NOW has become part of the Democratic Party and clearly it’s endorsement of Barack Obama demostates the partisan nature of the organization.

    Cynthia Ruccia:

NOW has one caveat in its endorsements—–that the candidate MUST be pro choice. That is why they haven’t endorsed any Republicans. NOW is just another old guard feminist group like NARAL and Emily’s List who require a pro abortion stance . That stand has become Democratic Party orthodoxy through the years. As a result we continue to see the real vacuum that has been caused by taking such a position. Pro choice=pro women in their eyes. And although many of us are pro choice, it is NOT the be all and end all of womens issues. It is so crazy how far these groups have moved from their initial stance to empower women.

The Hindu philosophy that everything eventually becomes its opposite has been borne out by these “feminist” groups. We at the New Agenda are simply the evolution of all of that. If pro choice is your litmus test, it is the most divisive of the social issues. And the women on the far right are just as doctrinaire. We always disliked their singlemindedness———————well we have our own crazies on the left and they are running the show. We MUST knock them out and make way for some sanity in the feminist movement. Since when do women’s groups not support women———-especially in historic times like these?

We should not vote for a candidate just because she has a vagina. We must vote for a candidate because of their support for women’s issues. In this regard, woman have had no better friend over the years than Joe Biden.

McCain pays his female staffers $1.04 for every $1 paid to a male staffer. Of his top 20 advisors 13 are female.

I know Obama’s words are pretty and oh so exciting, but I’ll go with the candidate who has actually demonstrated his commitment to gender equality instead. Obama is a hypocrite.

And let me guess, Evie is a paid Obama blogger, and a male blogger at that! The “right-wing organization” line has gotten very old.

Sarah Palin is the epitome of feminism. The feminist movement is about a woman’s right to choice and the ability to live her life according to her own terms without being harassed or degraded or treated unfairly. Sarah Palin has exercised her right to choose and she’s living her life the way she sees fit and she’s not asking for anyone’s permission and she’s not making any apologies. Sarah Palin is the poster child for the feminist movement. Too bad for the fascist feminists, the minority group of women who are trying to dictate what a woman is supposed to be, think and feel in order to qualify as a worthwhile woman. Too bad for those women because somewhere along the way they started looking alot like the Moral Majority and less like a feminist movement. But it’s over! Good-bye!

there probably is a case to be made that NOW has become an arm of the Democratic Party. it’s hard to explain why NOW wouldn’t support Olympia Snow and Susan Collins, both pro-choice republicans who are on board with women’s issues. Republicans haven’t been a whole lot better to Snow and Collins, though, calling them RINAs (republicans in name only). all of this makes me glad to be a registered independent–the partisan gridlock leaves a lot of moderates from both parties out at sea.

You can’t explain away NOW’s exclusive donations to Democratic candidates by their pro-choice requirement. There is a fraction of the republican party that is pro-choice (granted much smaller) – in 2006 12 Republican candidates were re-elected to the House who are pro-choice – 4 of whom were women: none of whom received support from NOW. That election cycle: $83,259 for Democrats $65 for Republicans. They’re the National Organization of Liberal Women.

I refuse to support McCain-Palin ticket just because Palin is a woman. Yes I am a woman, but I am a woman who can do my own thinking.

Yes I am pro-life when it comes to my body i.e. I would never make a decision in favor of abortion in my own personal life, but do not believe that I have the right to judge or prevent other women from deciding to make those decisions for themselves, so when it comes to a social stance I guess I would be pro-choice.

Yes I gave up a promising career to homeschool my son but that does not mean I blindly support another simply because there is another homeschooling mom is on the ticket.

Yes as I am trying to rebuild my career and regain lost ground due to time taken off to raise my family and face sexist attitudes daily. But I do not think asking tough questions on foreign policy or accountability in governance reeks of sexism! If anything at all I would much rather be chosen for a leadership position because of my competency and intelligence rather than just because I have a pretty face!

The point I am trying to make is we should be able to look at the big picture and have a broader perspective rather than a narrow myopic view of a couple of issues. We need to go for a competent set of honest individuals who understand the current needs and understand that sometimes a “Man” is a better supporter of women’s needs than a “Woman” who is willing to undermine other women and their needs!

In the interest of fairness, since Legistorm’s data was cited earlier, I thought it useful to post a brief statement from the Legistorm cite itself that mentions the source of the actual analysis of the data and its possible misreading.

    Obama’s alleged pay gap
Posted by LegiStorm on Sunday, September 14, 2008

Over the last few days, a tempest has been brewing over an allegation made by Scripps Howard columnist Deroy Murdock that Sen. Barrack Obama (D-Ill.) pays less to women than he does to men in his Senate office. All the stories have accurately cited LegiStorm as the source for the raw data.

Naturally, the allegation has lit up the conservative blogosphere and made its way onto television, including ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopolous”.

But along the way, a few commentators have taken liberty with the facts about LegiStorm’s role so we wanted to clear that up. We carry the data and are happy to be the source for anyone, liberal or conservative, who wants to do analysis of that data. That’s what it’s there for – to provide openess in government and spark debate.

We were not, however, the source for the analysis that led to conclusion about equal pay. That analysis was solely done by Murdock. We do not take a position either for or against Murdock’s analysis. We will simply note that there has been some debate about the validity of his claims because he did not include consideration of whether the men and women were doing equal work. Whether this criticism was valid is also something we do not take a position on.

We welcome hearing more about this issue in the future and hope that our data can serve as a useful source for both sides as they try to discover the truth.

Would I rather see Hillary Clinton running for president than Sarah Palin for VP, you bet, but thanks to Obama aided by Pelosi and Dean, that was never going to happen. Smart women are still being stereotyped as shrews and bitches for daring to step out of their expected roles. I applaud you for this beyond words. Amy, I was at your speech in Washington and it was the most inspiring of all there because it was the ONLY one that didn’t end on a note of “unity” and it wasn’t about party. It was about making a difference for the people who voted in Florida and Michigan for a competent female candidate.

This move just makes me look forward to working with you all even more.

N.O.W. no longer represents me and they haven’t for a long, long time. They have been ineffective and Obama pandered to them. Sold to the highest bidder! They had to know the effect this would have and have excused it for dollars despite the cost. This I cannot, and I will not forgive.

The opportunity they have missed in standing up against the misogyny that rained down on Hillary Clinton is nothing short of disgustingly selfish.

During the primaries an older friend of mine gave me some timely words of wisdom and they ring so true to me today…”You women’s organizations are getting too lax and embedded. Make them KNOW you mean business about these issues. No Justice, No Peace!” She was fierce in her support of Hillary and frustrated on many levels with what she saw as a “we can’t go that far, or be that militant in our struggles” attitude. Under the circumstances we faced, with that blood bath of misogyny in the media she felt N.O.W. ought to have come out far, far stronger against it. That’s even more true now than ever.

It seemed to me that the women’s movement for some time often wanted confuse being popular over standing strong to convictions.

The idea that because “some” women meaning those for Obama support their decision and that somehow justifies this is nonsense. Saying he is a champion of women’s rights is beyond ludicrous after what his campaign not only sat silent for but, encouraged in this primary season.

Might as well call yourself the National Organization AGAINST Women since you have endorsed a misogynist.

The New Agenda is needed and welcomed. I will spread the word far and wide.

    Amy,
I fail to understand your point of you. This is what I interpret: just because I am a woman I am supposed to blindly back another woman irrespective of what she represents… else I am not “pro- women”. I am sorry Amy but that to me sounds like you are asking me to buy into ” Herd” mentality and I am sorry I am not a cow to be herded!

This is precisely what bothers me – a man can vote for anybody based on his belief of a principle, but a woman has to vote for another woman irrespective of what she stands for?? I am sorry I cannot give up my right as an individual just to belong to a herd.

The New Agenda does not endorse any candidate.

Historically, NOW has only endorsed female candidates for president, because NOW — like most feminist organizations, including this one — recognizes that women are severely underrepresented in government.

It is generally true that women and minorities are best served when they are fairly represented in their nation’s governments.

Elected female leaders calling themselves “Obama Girls”. What have we come to.

Obama Sending His Girls “To Stand in Opposition to a Woman About to Shatter One of the Hardest Glass Ceilings in the History of Mankind”. This is absolutely pathetic.

Given that the Republican track record for promoting women into positions of power is at least as good as that of the Democrats, I have often wondered why NOW became so attached to the Democrats. Their refusal to support the Republican senators from Maine who even meet the pro-choice litmus test seals the deal that NOW is a Democratic organization. Maybe they need a name change to more honestly reflect that. I’m not sure that everyone realizes that EMILY’s list only supports Democrats, too. When I withdrew from the Democratic Party earlier this year to become a Gynocrat instead, I discovered a lot of really talented women in the Republican Party.
